OpenAI Faces Big Changes as Top Leaders, Including CTO Mira Murati, Step Down

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is going through a major leadership change. Mira Murati, who was the Chief Technology Officer and briefly took over as interim CEO last year, has announced she’s leaving. On Wednesday, September 26, Murati said she made the tough decision to step down, wanting more time for personal exploration.

She isn’t the only one leaving. CEO Sam Altman shared that two other key leaders, Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew and research head Barret Zoph, are also exiting. Altman clarified that these departures were separate and friendly.

This comes after several other top executives left in recent months. Greg Brockman, co-founder and president, took a sabbatical in August, while John Schulman moved to a competitor, Anthropic. In May, Ilya Sutskever, another co-founder, left to start his own AI project.

Despite these changes, OpenAI continues to be a leader in artificial intelligence, known for its popular chatbot, ChatGPT. Murati spoke highly of her time with the company, calling it a “pinnacle of AI innovation.”

Altman admitted the sudden departures are unusual but said OpenAI is not a “normal company.” He also announced new roles for six team members as part of the company’s ongoing evolution.

This shakeup comes less than a year after Altman was briefly ousted as CEO, with Murati stepping in as interim leader before Altman was quickly reinstated.
