What is ex dividend?
Ex-Dividend is a financial term meaning “without dividends”. When a company has decided to pay dividends to its stockholders, that company declares ex-dividend on a certain date. On the ex-dividend date, new stockholders of the company are not entitled to receive the dividend. This means that if a person buys the stock of this company after X dividend date, then he is not a participant in the dividend of that financial year. Conversely, if a stockholder purchases the stock before this date, he is entitled to the dividend and gets the benefit of the dividend being paid. Ex-dividend date can also impact the pricing of the stock of the company concerned without dividend. Because there is anticipation of dividends being received by new stockholders along with dividends, this may increase demand for the stock, causing the stock price to rise. Ex-dividend date is an important date which has a significant impact in the stock market and is important for investors because by this they can be assured of dividend benefits.
