Adani and Uber Explore Strategic Partnership to Propel Electric Vehicle Adoption and Super App Growth in India

Adani Group and Uber are reportedly in talks to form a strategic partnership, aiming to introduce Adani’s electric passenger vehicles to the ride-hailing platform. The meeting between Gautam Adani and Uber’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, on February 24 focused on enhancing the Adani conglomerate’s super app, Adani One. Launched in 2022, Adani One offers various services, including flight bookings, vacation packages, airport services, and may soon facilitate taxi bookings through Uber integration.

The collaboration aligns with Uber’s commitment to accelerating the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) in India. Adani, known for its presence in electric commercial vehicles like buses and trucks, plans to expand into electric passenger vehicles. The potential tie-up with Uber would enable Adani to swiftly integrate its vehicles into Uber’s fleet, supporting the ride-hailing platform’s goal of becoming a zero-emission mobility platform globally by 2040.

While Adani has already entered the electric commercial vehicle market, it has significant internal needs for its port and airport operations, making the partnership beneficial for both parties. Adani’s bid for 3,600 electric buses showcases its dedication to sustainable transportation.

The partnership is part of Adani’s broader investment plan of $100 billion over the next decade, spanning various industries, including energy transition. Adani is involved in large-scale projects such as solar farms, solar manufacturing capacity, EV charging stations, and battery replacement infrastructure.

The collaboration between Adani and Uber has the potential to accelerate the adoption of electric four-wheelers in India, providing manufacturers with commercial applications for financial viability. Additionally, it could evolve into one of the largest global fleet partnerships for electric vehicles for Uber.

The move towards widespread electric vehicle adoption may also positively impact India’s gig economy. Uber, present in 125 cities in India since its 2013 launch, has completed over 3 billion trips, assisting more than 8 lakh Indians in income generation, according to the company’s statement.

In an exclusive interview, Uber’s CEO emphasized the company’s focus on the ride-sharing business, differentiating itself from its Indian rival, Ola. Uber’s commitment to electric mobility aligns with its global initiative, while Ola Electric, affiliated with Ola, is set for an IPO alongside a venture into artificial intelligence by Bhavish Aggarwal, the founder of Ola.
