Tamil Nadu Government Calls for Immediate Return to Work as 1,100 Samsung Workers Continue Strike

The Tamil Nadu government has urged the striking workers of Samsung India Electronics to return to work immediately, considering the impact on other employees and their families. Around 1,100 workers out of 1,750 at the Sriperumbudur plant near Chennai have been on strike since September 9, demanding better wages, improved working conditions, and recognition of their union, which is backed by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU).

Minister for Industries, TRB Rajaa, who held talks with both the workers and management, expressed concern over the ongoing strike. He pointed out that the issue of union recognition is currently in court, and therefore cannot be discussed. Rajaa emphasized that the government, including Chief Minister M K Stalin, supports the workers, but urged them to return to work for the sake of their colleagues and families, especially as the festive season approaches.

Rajaa noted that workers had made 14 demands, including better amenities at the factory, and the management has promised to address these issues. He also reminded workers that Chief Minister Stalin has always prioritized worker welfare when attracting companies to the state.

During the talks, some employees expressed fear of losing their jobs due to the strike, and Rajaa warned that the extended protest could result in loss of wages. Many workers are new to their jobs, some are newly married, and their salaries range between ₹30,000 and ₹60,000, he said.

In a statement, Samsung India Electronics said it had signed an agreement with the workers’ committee to improve conditions at the factory and committed to working together to resolve any issues. The company thanked the Tamil Nadu government for its support and reiterated its compliance with all laws and regulations.
