Young Investors Take Over Indian Stock Market, Older Investors Pull Back – NSE Report

According to the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the Indian stock market is seeing a major shift in investor demographics, with younger investors under the age of 30 now taking a dominant role. Official data highlights that the number of young investors has surged significantly between March 2018 and August 2024. In March 2018, this age group represented just 22.9% of the total investor base, but by August 2024, their share had jumped to a striking 40%.

NSE stated, “From March 2018 to August 2024, there has been a notable increase in younger investors entering the market. The share of investors under 30 years old has surged from 22.9% in March 2018 to a significant 40% by August 2024, indicating growing interest among younger individuals.”

However, while younger investors have been increasing their presence rapidly, participation from older age groups has either remained stable or seen a decline. Specifically, the 30-39 and 40-49 age groups have not experienced any major changes in their share of the market during this period.

In contrast, investors aged 50 and above have seen a clear reduction in their participation in the stock market. The data shows that investors aged 50-59 years, as well as those 60 years and older, have consistently reduced their presence. Notably, the share of investors above 60 years of age fell from 12.7% in March 2018 to just 7.2% by August 2024.

NSE added, “Older age groups (50-59 years and 60 years) have seen a consistent decrease in their respective shares.”

This shift has also influenced the overall age profile of the investor base in the stock market. According to NSE data, the median age of stock market investors has dropped from 38 years in March 2018 to 32 years by March 2024. Similarly, the average (mean) age of investors fell from 41.2 years in March 2018 to 35.8 years by August 2024.

This trend clearly indicates that stock market investing is becoming more popular among younger people, while older generations are gradually reducing their involvement.
