Tata’s ₹6,000 Crore Hosur Plant to Begin iPhone Production This November, Reports Say

Tata Electronics’ iPhone factory in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, is expected to begin production in November 2024, according to a report from Business Standard.

The 250-acre Hosur plant will be Apple’s fourth iPhone assembly unit in India and Tata Electronics’ second plant for Apple’s flagship smartphones.

Preparations for Production

Sources mentioned that preparations are well underway, with the plant’s component factory, set up in 2021, already producing enclosures for some iPhone models made in India and exported to China. The new facility is expected to hire around 50,000 workers, mostly women, making it the second-largest iPhone manufacturing plant in India after Foxconn’s facility in Tamil Nadu.

Boosting Apple’s Production in India

Bloomberg reported earlier this year that the Hosur facility aligns with Apple’s plan to expand its manufacturing operations in India. The plant is expected to have around 20 assembly lines and will employ around 50,000 workers within the next two years. The plant is projected to be fully operational in 12 to 18 months.

Strengthening Local Supply Chains

The new plant will help Apple localize its supply chain in India and strengthen its partnership with Tata. Currently, Tata oversees an iPhone manufacturing unit acquired from Wistron Corp. in Karnataka. Apple’s shift to manufacturing in India is part of its strategy to diversify operations beyond China by partnering with companies across India, Thailand, Malaysia, and other regions.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Apple and its suppliers plan to manufacture over 50 million iPhones annually in India over the next two to three years, with plans to produce even more units in the future. Tata has been expanding its partnership with Apple by increasing operations at its existing Hosur facility and planning to open 100 retail stores dedicated to Apple products in India. Apple, in turn, has already opened two stores in India and plans to launch three more.
