Tata Steel Teams Up with Tenova to Build Eco-Friendly Steel Furnace in Wales

Tata Steel from India has made an agreement with the Italian company Tenova to set up an electric arc furnace at its Port Talbot plant in Wales. This decision comes just weeks after the plant stopped using its blast furnaces, marking the end of traditional steel production at one of Europe’s largest steelworks.

The Port Talbot site will undergo a decarbonization project over the next three to four years to install the electric arc furnace, which will produce steel using recycled scrap metal. This project, worth £1.25 billion (about $1.68 billion), will receive £500 million in support from the British government.

Once operational, expected by the end of 2027, the new furnace will cut carbon emissions from steel production at the site by 90%. This reduction is equivalent to preventing 5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year, according to Tata Steel.

Tata Steel has completed a public consultation regarding the planning application and aims to submit this application in November 2024. The company plans to begin construction on the site around July 2025.
