Tata Power Joins Forces with Druk Green Power to Develop 5,000 MW of Clean Energy in Bhutan

Tata Power has partnered with Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to develop 5,000 MW of clean energy in Bhutan. This agreement focuses on harnessing Bhutan’s hydropower potential and supporting the energy needs of both Bhutan and India.

DGPC, which is owned by Bhutan’s government, plans to diversify its energy mix and expand its power generation capacity. The country currently produces 2,300 MW of energy, and aims to increase this to 25,000 MW by 2040.

The partnership will focus on hydropower projects, including the 1,125 MW Dorjilung hydroelectric project, the 740 MW Gongri Reservoir, and a 1,800 MW pumped storage project. Additionally, Tata Power will also develop 500 MW of solar projects.

The collaboration is a significant step towards Bhutan’s goal of improving energy security and contributing to regional energy integration. Tata Power has a history of successful projects in Bhutan, including the 126 MW Dagachhu Hydropower Plant and a 1,200 km transmission line that delivers clean power from Bhutan to India.

This new project is expected to unlock Bhutan’s vast renewable energy resources, contributing to economic development and energy security in the region.
