Tata Power Fuels India’s Green Future with ₹21,000 Cr Wind Turbine Mega Deal—3 GW Capacity Sought for Hybrid Projects

Tata Power, a leading renewable energy company, is looking for suppliers of wind turbines with a total capacity of over 3 gigawatts (GW) for its wind-solar hybrid projects across India. This order, valued at over ₹21,000 crore, is one of the biggest in India’s wind energy market. Sources suggest the total requirement may grow to 5 GW over the next five years, bringing the total contract value to around ₹35,000 crore.

Four major wind turbine manufacturers – Siemens Gamesa, Senvion India, Envision Energy, and Suzlon Energy – are reportedly bidding for the contract. The bids will likely be split into multiple smaller contracts. Tata Power plans to install over 1 GW of wind energy capacity annually and aims to invest $9 billion in expanding its renewable energy projects over the next five to six years.

Currently, Tata Power has a renewable energy capacity of 10.5 GW, with 5.7 GW under development. Of this, 4.8 GW is already operational, consisting of 3.8 GW of solar and 1 GW of wind energy. The company plans to double its renewable capacity to 20 GW by 2030 and achieve 100% clean energy generation by 2045. It is also building a 966 MW solar-wind hybrid plant to provide renewable power to Tata Steel and is collaborating with state-owned SJVN Ltd on a 1.3 GW renewable energy project.

Although Tata Power operates 8.8 GW of thermal power, it has decided not to expand in this area and is instead focused on renewable energy. By FY27, the company aims to double its profit after tax compared to FY23, according to a report by Sharekhan.

India’s wind power market is expected to grow significantly, with the government targeting the addition of 25 GW of wind energy capacity by 2028. A report by Fitch Ratings also noted a significant increase in renewable energy project auctions in India, which will help boost capacity in the next few years. Tata Power’s 3 GW wind turbine order comes at a time when demand for standalone wind projects in India has been relatively low over the past few years.
