Tata Motors will start building a new Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) factory in Tamil Nadu by September, says Business Standard. This will be the first time a premium car is fully made in India. The plant is set to be fully operational by late 2025 or early 2026.
The company has secured over 400 acres near Panapakkam in Ranipet district, close to Chennai and Ennore ports. JLR will focus on manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs) at this site, while Tata Motors will produce various vehicles, including hybrids, in Tamil Nadu.
Tata Motors plans to use components from suppliers of Hyundai Motor India and Renault Nissan Automotive India, along with its own suppliers. The Tamil Nadu government will support the supply chain.
The project, a greenfield setup, is expected to take 12-18 months to complete, aiming for late 2025 or early 2026. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin will lay the foundation stone.
This new plant will be part of the ₹18,000 crore Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor. The Bengaluru-Chennai expressway and Dedicated Freight Corridor will boost connectivity in this region.
Currently, JLR’s Pune unit assembles models like the Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Sport, Evoque, Jaguar F-PACE, and Land Rover Discovery Sport from completely knocked-down (CKD) units.
In March, Tata Motors signed an MoU with Tamil Nadu’s government for a ₹9,000 crore investment over five years, creating up to 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.
