Tata Motors’ Punch and Nexon Lead with 5-Star Bharat NCAP Ratings

New Delhi: Tata Motors, a key player in India’s electric vehicle sector, has secured top safety ratings for its Punch and Nexon electric vehicles (EVs) from Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP).

These models are the first electric vehicles to receive a 5-star rating under BNCAP, which evaluates vehicle safety through rigorous testing methods aligned with global standards.

The certification was presented to Tata Motors by Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, who also launched the BNCAP initiative in 2022. This program aims to enhance road safety by providing transparent safety information to consumers, encouraging car manufacturers to produce safer vehicles for the Indian market.

Safety Initiative

BNCAP assesses vehicles based on criteria such as protection for adult occupants, child safety, and the presence of advanced safety technologies.

Tata Motors’ Harrier and Safari models have also achieved 5-star BNCAP ratings, underscoring the company’s commitment to safety across its product range.

In other news, Tata Motors anticipates a surge in its electric vehicle segment following the launch of the Curvv, a coupe-style electric SUV. Despite a slight slowdown in EV sales recently, Tata Motors remains optimistic about achieving sales of over 100,000 EVs this fiscal year, driven by new model introductions and customer demand for eco-friendly vehicles.

While the overall passenger vehicle sales grew for Tata Motors in the fiscal year 2024, EVs constituted 13% of the total sales, down from 16% in FY23 and 20% in FY22. This trend reflects shifting consumer preferences and the maturing of the EV market in India.
