MG Motor India, a partnership between China’s SAIC Motor and India’s JSW Group, is planning to launch a new electric car in India. This new model aims to compete with Tata’s upcoming Curvv EV.
According to sources cited by The Times of India, the new electric vehicle (EV) will be launched around the festive season and will be priced between MG’s Comet and ZS EV models, costing under Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom).
The upcoming MG EV will be a Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV), featuring a unibody construction, unlike traditional SUVs that have a body-on-frame design.
Expected Specifications:
- Battery: 50.3 kWh, similar to the ZS EV.
- Range: Potentially higher than the ZS EV’s 461 km due to the lighter weight of the new model.
- Motor: Front axle-mounted, producing 176 hp and 280 Nm.
Exclusive footage obtained by The Times of India shows the new car, described as an ‘Intelligent CUV’. It features a tall stance, a coupe-like roof, and large wheels, although other details remain hidden due to camouflage.
MG Motor currently sells two electric cars in India, the MG ZS EV and the Comet EV. The company has seen significant growth in its EV sales, with electric vehicles making up about 35% of its total sales. The ZS EV alone sold over 500 units in the last three months, marking a 95% sales increase from Q1 to Q2 in 2024. Overall, MG’s EV sales increased by 39% during this period.
With the new electric CUV, MG Motor aims to strengthen its presence in India’s growing EV market, currently led by Tata Motors. This new model is expected to enhance MG’s electric vehicle lineup, driving further success in the domestic market.
