Sun Pharma Opens New Plant To Boost Pharmaceutical Industry in Bangladesh

India’s involvement has significantly boosted Bangladesh’s pharmaceutical industry, said the Indian envoy at the inauguration of a new plant by a top Indian pharmaceutical company on Saturday. Sun Pharma, the world’s fourth-largest specialty generic pharmaceutical company, opened its new facility at the Meghna Industrial Economic Zone in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, near the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. This plant marks Sun Pharma’s second investment in Bangladesh and can produce over 1 billion tablets and capsules annually.

The inauguration was attended by Salman F Rahman, Private Industry and Investment Adviser to the Bangladesh Prime Minister, and Pranay Verma, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh. Verma praised the new investment as a sign of the growing economic and industrial relationship between Bangladesh and India.

Verma emphasized that India has played a key role in the development of Bangladesh’s pharmaceutical sector, supplying about 30% of the country’s Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API). He highlighted that this new plant, the first pharmaceutical unit in any Economic Zone of Bangladesh, showcases India’s ongoing commitment to partnering with Bangladesh and reflects Indian businesses’ increasing interest in investing there.

Verma also noted the strong cooperation between the two countries in the health sector, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when India provided vaccines and oxygen to Bangladesh, and Bangladesh sent critical medicines to India. He acknowledged Bangladesh’s progress in generic drug manufacturing and emphasized the potential for Indian companies to form partnerships with Bangladeshi firms through joint ventures, research and development efforts, and technology collaborations.
