“Stree 2,” a Hindi horror comedy, has quickly become one of the biggest hits of 2024. It made over ₹100 crore in just two days after its release on August 15.
The movie, produced by Maddock Films and Jio Studios, earned ₹118 crore in total box office revenue on its first two days, with net collections at ₹100.1 crore.
“Stree 2” is the fifth movie in the Maddock Supernatural Universe and a sequel to the 2018 film “Stree.” It stars Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee, and Aparshakti Khurana.
Despite the buzz, other films released on August 15, including “Khel Khel Mein,” “Vedaa,” “Thangalaan,” and “Double iSmart,” didn’t do as well as expected. “Khel Khel Mein,” starring Akshay Kumar, and John Abraham’s “Vedaa” earned ₹7.1 crore and ₹8.1 crore, respectively, in their first two days. Tamil action film “Thangalaan” and Telugu sci-fi “Double iSmart” collected ₹18 crore and ₹9 crore, respectively.
Elara Capital’s Karan Taurani had hoped for a box office boost on Independence Day and sees “Stree 2” as a standout performer. He predicts it could reach ₹150 crore in net lifetime collections, thanks to its strong start. He expects the momentum to continue in the third quarter of FY25 with several big franchise films.
According to Ormax, the total gross domestic box office receipts were ₹5,015 crore in the first half of the year.
