Reliance Jio has launched three new ‘True Unlimited Upgrade’ add-on plans in response to recent criticism over the removal of popular affordable prepaid plans. These new plans aim to address customer dissatisfaction caused by recent tariff increases.
The newly introduced add-on plans cannot be used independently but need to be added to an existing plan. They offer unlimited high-speed 5G connectivity, but this is only available for users with 5G-compatible devices connected to Jio’s True 5G network. When connected to 4G, data usage is capped according to the specifics of each plan:
- Plan 1: 9GB high-speed 4G data, unlimited high-speed 5G data (for 5G devices on Jio True 5G network).
- Plan 2: 6GB high-speed 4G data, unlimited high-speed 5G data (for 5G devices on Jio True 5G network).
- Plan 3: 3GB high-speed 4G data, unlimited high-speed 5G data (for 5G devices on Jio True 5G network).
These additions come after complaints from users about the discontinuation of previous affordable prepaid plans like the ₹1559 and ₹359 plans, which also offered unlimited 5G data but were standalone plans.
Moreover, only customers on prepaid plans offering 2GB of data per day or more are eligible for unlimited 5G data. Plans with less than 1.5GB per day will continue to operate under their data limits.
Reliance Jio, along with competitors Airtel and Vodafone Idea, recently increased tariffs by up to 25% across all prepaid, postpaid, and data plans. Annual plans saw significant price hikes, with some packs rising from ₹2,999 to ₹3,599.
These price hikes have stirred discontent among telecom users, leading to trends like ‘BoycottJio’ and a surge in users switching to BSNL, evident from the ‘BSNL ki ghar wapsi’ trend where users share selfies with their new BSNL SIM cards.
