Reliance Industries has started testing the country’s first homegrown smart television operating system (OS), developed by the company itself. This OS, named Jio TV OS, is based on Google’s Android platform and aims to compete with leading TV OSs like Samsung’s Tizen, LG’s webOS, and others from international brands.
JIO TV OS
The Jio TV OS is currently being tested by some Indian TV manufacturers for feedback and bug fixes before its anticipated launch alongside new 4K and full high-definition smart TVs by Diwali. Reliance plans to offer these TVs under its own brands like BPL and Reconnect, focusing mainly on the entry-level market segment.
Additionally, Reliance intends to license its Jio TV OS to other domestic TV makers, aiming to integrate its apps such as JioCinema and leverage its broadband services to generate revenue through advertising.
Additional Information
Last October, Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, announced the development of the Jio smart TV OS. The OS is open-source, allowing developers to create apps optimized not only for smart TVs but also for other connected devices like smartphones.
Despite challenges from established global brands with their own OSs, Reliance aims to expand adoption by partnering with smaller Indian brands. Market analysis suggests a decline in overall smart TV shipments for 2024, with growth observed only in larger screen sizes.
