TIME categorized Reliance and Tata as “Titans,” while Serum Institute was listed as a “Pioneer.”
Reliance, founded 58 years ago by Dhirubhai Ambani as a textile company, is now India’s most valuable company with a market capitalization of over $200 billion. Under Mukesh Ambani, Reliance has expanded into energy, retail, and telecommunications, and has become a key player in India’s streaming market through an $8.5 billion merger with Disney’s India operations.
Reliance’s telecom arm, Jio, has transformed India’s digital landscape with affordable mobile data. Reliance Retail is among the top 100 retailers globally and saw over 1 billion footfalls in FY24 across its 18,800 stores. The company is investing $10 billion in new energy and materials and aims to be carbon neutral by 2035.
Serum Institute is the world’s largest vaccine maker, producing 3.5 billion doses annually for diseases like measles, polio, and HPV. CEO Adar Poonawalla credits the company’s private ownership for its ability to keep vaccine prices low.
Tata Group, founded in 1868, has a diverse portfolio ranging from steel and software to hotels and fashion. Under Chairman N Chandrasekaran, Tata has invested in tech manufacturing, AI, and semiconductor chips. Tata was the first Indian company to assemble iPhones and is developing an AI cloud in India. Its combined market capitalization reached $365 billion in February 2023.
