PM Modi Opens First Bio-CNG Plant in Jharkhand to Turn Waste into Energy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated GAIL’s first Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant in Ranchi, Jharkhand, during a virtual event. This plant can process 150 tonnes of municipal solid waste each day, producing 5,000 kilograms of Bio-CNG and 25 tonnes of organic manure.

Attendees included Union Minister of State for Defense Sanjay Seth, GAIL officials, and local leaders. The plant is located on 7.86 acres at the Jhiri dumping site. The biogas produced will supply nearby CNG stations, fueling over 600 vehicles a day and supporting the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative for clean energy.

The facility uses water scrubbing technology for purifying the biogas. CEID Consultants & Engineering managed the project from design to installation. The plant will collect wet waste from homes and businesses in Ranchi.

In March 2021, GAIL partnered with the Ranchi Municipal Corporation to establish this plant, signed in the presence of Jharkhand’s Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

Prince Gandhi, CEO of CEID, expressed excitement over the project, noting its importance for both Jharkhand and the country’s push for a circular economy. The plant will create jobs, support rural economies, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. He emphasized that the project aligns with government initiatives like Waste to Wealth and aims for a sustainable future, including producing organic manure that can enhance soil fertility.
