On Tuesday, Nitin Gadkari, India’s Minister for Road Transport and Highways, led a meeting with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) to discuss the readiness of the auto industry for ethanol and flex fuel vehicles. The ministry shared on Twitter that the discussions focused on preparing to launch flex engine vehicles that can run on ethanol soon.

Gadkari emphasized that moving from fossil fuels to biofuels could help India become self-reliant, lower pollution levels, reduce the annual fossil fuel import bill, and provide cheaper fuel options for consumers—all while benefiting farmers.

He encouraged SIAM members to find ways to make flex fuel vehicles more appealing to the public, referencing Brazil’s successful use of flex fuels and biofuels in its transportation system.

Previously, Gadkari announced that major automakers like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Toyota are set to introduce flex-engine cars. Additionally, two-wheeler manufacturers like TVS Motors, Bajaj Auto, and Honda have prepared ethanol bikes and are awaiting the necessary infrastructure, including ethanol pumps, to launch their products.

Gadkari pointed out that India’s fossil fuel economy is valued at ₹22 lakh crore, while the biofuel economy is only ₹2 lakh crore, indicating significant growth potential. He stressed the importance of reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels, especially given the current global geopolitical tensions. This shift to biofuels would not only support the agricultural sector and increase farmers’ incomes but also create new job opportunities, helping India achieve self-sufficiency.
