Karnataka’s electricity commission has made it easier for electric vehicle (EV) owners to install charging stations in high-rise buildings and large apartment complexes. The new rules simplify the process for setting up EV chargers in these locations.
The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has instructed the energy department and electricity supply companies (Escoms) to create clear guidelines for installing EV-charging units in apartments and housing societies. These guidelines will be published online for easy access.
According to the new rules, residents with designated parking spaces in multi-story buildings can install EV-charging points within their existing electricity load or increase the load if needed. EV owners can also get new connections under a specific EV-charging tariff.
The wiring from the metering panel to the charging points must follow safety regulations set by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). KERC has directed the chief electrical inspector to issue safety norms and wiring diagrams to ensure user safety.
Residents, EV promoters, and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) had requested clear procedures due to installation challenges. Now, those wishing to install chargers in common areas must get approval from Escoms and follow CEA safety rules. Escoms will also provide servicing for these charging stations.
The new rules aim to make it easier and safer for EV owners to charge their vehicles in apartments and high-rises across Karnataka.
