Reliance Industries (RIL) is likely to focus on just one streaming platform, JioCinema, after it completes its merger with Star and Viacom18. Despite Disney+ Hotstar having more downloads, RIL is considering combining it with JioCinema to create a single, stronger platform.
Currently, Disney+ Hotstar, owned by Disney, has over 500 million downloads, while JioCinema, owned by Viacom18, has over 100 million. The merger will create a massive media company with over 100 channels and two streaming services. However, RIL plans to simplify things by merging Disney+ Hotstar with JioCinema, which will help save costs and make JioCinema a one-stop destination for entertainment.
With this merger, JioCinema would become the top streaming app in India, offering over 125,000 hours of content, including popular shows, movies, and sports like the Indian Premier League (IPL). The move is seen as a way to better compete with giants like YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video.
