India has launched a major plan worth ₹9.15 lakh crore to upgrade its power grid and ensure energy security for the future. Union Minister Manohar Lal announced this during a press conference in New Delhi, sharing details of the National Electricity Plan for 2023 to 2032. The plan aims to meet the country’s growing power needs, which are expected to reach a peak demand of 458 GW by 2032.
“Our power system is crucial for national security and economic stability,” said Manohar Lal. The new plan will help prepare India for future energy demands and incorporate new technologies like renewable energy and green hydrogen.
India’s power transmission network will grow from 4.85 lakh circuit kilometers (ckm) in 2024 to 6.48 lakh ckm by 2032, and the capacity will increase from 1,251 GVA to 2,342 GVA. This expansion is important to meet the rising electricity needs and include more renewable energy sources.
The minister also shared that 50 GW of inter-state transmission capacity is approved to handle 280 GW of renewable energy by 2030. So far, 42 GW has been completed, 85 GW is under construction, and 75 GW is in the bidding phase.
In the last 100 days, schemes for 50.9 GW of renewable energy have been approved, with an investment of ₹60,676 crore. These will help transfer renewable energy from states like Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
The government has also connected 83,596 homes in vulnerable tribal areas to electricity and improved power reliability for farmers by separating power lines for agriculture.
A new cybersecurity team has been set up to protect the power sector from cyber threats. Additionally, new guidelines were announced to boost electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the country, supporting the growth of electric vehicles.
