India’s Energy Revolution: Piped Gas, LPG, and Ethanol Blending Soar Over the Last Decade

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri shared impressive progress in India’s energy sector, noting that the number of piped gas connections has jumped from 25 lakhs in 2014 to 1.32 crores in 2024.

“Major changes in the past decade have made our energy more available, affordable, and sustainable,” Puri said.

In a post on social media platform ‘X’, the minister outlined five key steps toward energy independence. He mentioned that India’s refining capacity has grown from 215 million metric tonnes per year in 2014 to 256.8 million in 2024.

Ethanol blending in petrol has also risen significantly, from 1.53% in 2014 to 15% in 2024.

Regarding LPG connections, Puri highlighted that in 2014, there were 14.52 crore users. By August 1, 2024, this number had more than doubled to 32.73 crore, including 10.33 crore connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).

Puri also noted that the natural gas pipeline network has expanded from 15,000 km in 2014 to 24,881 km in 2024.

These developments, including increasing Ujjwala connections for smoke-free kitchens, boosting refining capacities, and promoting green initiatives like ethanol blending, are helping India move towards energy independence while prioritizing both people and the planet, Puri added.

On fuel prices, Puri stated that India has managed to keep fuel prices stable between January 2022 and July 2024, even as other advanced countries faced steep increases. He also mentioned that the capacity of Petronet LNG’s Dahej terminal in Gujarat, India’s largest LNG facility, is being expanded from 17.5 million metric tonnes per year to 22.5 million, as part of India’s push towards energy self-sufficiency.
