India Boosts Sri Lanka’s Energy with First Payment for Hybrid Power Projects on Remote Islands

India has made its first payment to Sri Lanka for Hybrid Power Projects aimed at meeting the energy needs of three remote islands: Delft, Nainativu, and Analaitivu. These islands are not connected to the main power grid, and India is providing $11 million to help develop these projects.

The payment was handed over by Santosh Jha, India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, to Sulakshana Jayawardena, the Secretary of the Ministry of Power and Energy and Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA).

On August 23, Jha visited Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province and met with local officials, including Governor Senthil Thondaman and State Minister of Trade and Environment S. Viyalendiran. They discussed various projects supported by India in the region and shared views on political developments in Sri Lanka.

During his visit, Jha also met with members of the Batticaloa District Chamber of Commerce to explore ways to enhance business relationships between Sri Lanka and India.

Earlier, on August 21, Jha reviewed the progress of a Tri-lingual Multi-ethnic School being built in Polonnaruwa under Indian grant assistance, aimed at community development.

On August 20, Jha distributed solar lanterns to families in Pitakanda, Rattotta Estate, as part of India’s efforts to support communities in the plantation regions of Sri Lanka.

These actions reaffirm India’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s development across various sectors.
