India Aims for Coal Self-Reliance: Government Pushes for More Mining and New Projects

Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy emphasized the need to boost mining operations and launch new projects to help India become self-reliant in the coal sector. He stated that all branches of Coal India Ltd (CIL) must meet their annual targets to fulfill the country’s fossil fuel needs.

The minister assured that the government would provide full support, including help with land acquisition and environmental clearances, to advance these initiatives.

Coal India is responsible for over 80% of the country’s coal production. Reddy visited the headquarters of CIL’s Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) in Nagpur to review its performance. He looked into WCL’s coal production, productivity, and dispatch efficiency, while also addressing issues faced by local communities affected by projects.

A detailed presentation was given, highlighting key metrics for coal production, dispatch, and overburden removal for the first two quarters of the current financial year. WCL assured that it would meet its production targets by the end of the fiscal year.
