Mumbai: Hindalco Industries is set to invest $10 billion to expand its operations in India and at its US-based subsidiary, Novelis Inc. This announcement was made by the company’s chairman, Kumar Mangalam Birla, during the annual general meeting on Thursday.
The investment will fund both ongoing and new projects in the near future. Among the key projects are the expansion of Hindalco’s aluminium and copper smelters, the Aditya flat-rolled products plant, an alumina refinery in Rayagada, and the Bay Minnette plant at Novelis in the US.
Birla highlighted the importance of Hindalco’s metals in supporting India’s major development initiatives, or “Vikas,” which will drive urbanisation, digital advancements, clean energy, e-mobility, and storage solutions over the next decade.
He expects aluminium consumption in India to double to 10 million tonnes in the next 10 years, with copper consumption also set to increase by 10% in the coming years. This growth will be spurred by the government’s focus on infrastructure projects in sectors like transportation, railways, energy, and construction.
Hindalco is strategically expanding its capacities and introducing new products to meet the evolving needs of India, particularly in areas like infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) and solar energy. The company is building an alumina refinery in Rayagada, Odisha, with the first phase set to produce 850,000 tonnes by 2026-27. Additionally, Hindalco is considering a near 200,000-tonne expansion at its Aditya aluminium smelter in Odisha.
For its copper operations, Hindalco plans to increase its smelting capacity and is exploring a brownfield expansion in Gujarat. The company is also establishing the country’s largest copper inner groove tube plant in Wagodia, Gujarat, expected to be operational by the end of 2024.
In the US, the Bay Minnette plant is slated to begin operations in the second half of 2026. Hindalco has already secured long-term contracts for the beverage packaging capacity at this plant.
