HDFC Bank Experiences Unexpected Downtime for Online Banking Services

HDFC Bank, India’s largest private sector bank, faced unexpected downtime on its net banking and mobile banking services on Monday. The outage lasted over an hour and affected some customers trying to make NEFT and RTGS transactions.

Customers expressed their frustration on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). One user, Abhishek Choudhari, asked, “Is HDFC Bank server down? I can’t access net banking or the mobile app.” Another user, Suma, shared that she was unable to log in for an hour due to server issues. Many users reported receiving error messages or maintenance alerts when trying to access HDFC Bank’s services.

The bank confirmed that the issue has been resolved. A spokesperson stated, “The Bank had to take an unscheduled downtime earlier today as some operations like transactions through RTGS and NEFT using net banking were affected. The issue stands resolved.”

HDFC Bank has invested significantly in technology upgrades after facing a year-long ban on its digital banking operations. In December 2020, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) instructed the bank to stop issuing new credit cards until it resolved its tech issues, which also included halting new digital initiatives. The RBI lifted these restrictions in March 2022.

To prevent future outages, HDFC Bank announced in June 2022 that it would move its payments platform out of its core banking module, ensuring minimal payment downtime even if core banking is unavailable. The bank has also established a new center in Bengaluru to focus on improving its mobile and internet banking services.
