HAL Joins Elite Club of Maharatna Companies: Check Out the Full List of India’s Top PSUs

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a major Indian public sector company, has been awarded ‘Maharatna’ status by the Government of India. This makes HAL the 14th Maharatna company in India. The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) shared this news through their official account on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), announcing that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman approved HAL’s upgrade to Maharatna status.

The DPE posted, “Hon’ble Finance Minister has approved the upgrade of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to the 14th Maharatna CPSE. This proposal had earlier been recommended by an Inter-Ministerial Committee and the Apex Committee led by the Cabinet Secretary. HAL, a Department of Defence Production (DoDP) company, recorded an annual turnover of ₹28,162 crore and a net profit of ₹7,595 crore for the fiscal year 2023-24.”

What Does Maharatna Status Mean for HAL?

With this status, HAL gains more freedom in making strategic decisions. It can now invest up to ₹5,000 crore or 15% of its net worth (whichever is higher) in a single project without needing government approval. HAL will also be able to explore mergers, acquisitions, and other strategic investments both in India and internationally, giving it more flexibility to grow.
