The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued an advisory urging stakeholders to increase the number of women in the aviation workforce to 25% by 2025. This move aims to reduce gender bias and promote women empowerment in the industry.
Currently, women make up 5-14% of the workforce in various aviation roles in India, with the highest representation among pilots at 14%. The number of women pilots has been rising, with 294 out of 1,622 commercial pilot licenses (CPLs) issued to women in 2023, a 22% increase from 2022.
DGCA director general Vikram Dev Dutt stated, “Stakeholders should promote more women in aviation, introduce leadership and mentorship programs, address stereotypes and gender bias, and improve work-life balance for women employees.”
Monitoring Gender Ratio
The DGCA has advised airlines and airports to monitor their gender ratios to identify diversity gaps, set diversity goals for hiring, ensure equal representation during recruitment, promote women in committees and task groups, provide maternity leave, and adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual harassment.
Airlines are also encouraged to create policies offering cabin crew opportunities in technical or operational roles through special programs. Additionally, the DGCA suggests evaluating exit interviews of women leaving the organization to improve retention, conducting training on gender bias, and developing programs to rehire women after breaks due to parenting or other life events.
