Defence Ministry raised objections at Godrej’s housing project in Mumbai

The Defence Ministry has raised objections to a residential project by Godrej Properties in Mumbai, demanding that construction be halted. The project, valued at around Rs 7,000 crore, is said to be too close to the Central Ordnance Depot (COD) in Kandivali.

The Godrej Reserve project is being built on 18.6 acres of land. Godrej has already launched about 1.91 million square feet of the project and has received bookings for 1.51 million square feet, worth Rs 2,693 crore, according to the company’s FY24 regulatory filing.

The Defence Ministry has asked the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to issue a ‘stop-work notice’ for the project, stating that the plot is within 500 meters of the Kandivali complex.

A spokesperson from Godrej Properties stated, “We always start our projects after getting all necessary approvals from the relevant authorities. In this case, we have all the required approvals from the concerned authorities and RERA (Real Estate Regulatory Authority). We have not received any communication from any authority about non-compliance.”

The COD referred to the Union government’s May 2011 guidelines, which specify that no construction is allowed within 100 meters of any defense establishment. Additionally, buildings up to four storeys high are permitted within 100-500 meters of the perimeter, but only with a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Defence Ministry.
