Viasat, Inc., a satellite communications company, has announced a successful trial of direct-to-device satellite connectivity in India in partnership with state-owned BSNL. This new technology allows everyday devices like mobile phones, smartwatches, and cars to connect directly to satellite services without needing special hardware.

During the trial, Viasat demonstrated two-way messaging and emergency messaging using a regular Android smartphone that is set up for non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity. Messages were sent to one of Viasat’s geostationary satellites located about 36,000 km away. This trial shows that connecting satellite services to mobile phones is possible for users in India.

Viasat, along with BSNL, showcased these satellite-powered messaging services at the India Mobile Congress. The company aims to expand satellite services for consumer and IoT devices around the world.

Sandeep Moorthy, Chief Technical Officer at Viasat, stated that direct-to-device (D2D) technology could help people in India who lack reliable terrestrial connectivity gain access to satellite services. He believes D2D could improve the efficiency and safety of India’s production and supply chains, as well as enhance automotive safety and maintenance.

With partners like BSNL, Viasat is working towards creating an open and collaborative D2D ecosystem to provide seamless connectivity, no matter where people, devices, or vehicles are located.
