Banks in Assam Closed on September 4th: Here’s Why and Other Key Dates to Remember

All banks in Assam will be closed on Wednesday, September 4th, to honor the death anniversary of Srimanta Shankardev, a respected saint, poet, and social reformer who greatly influenced the Bhakti movement and the spread of Vaishnavism in Assam. In his memory, September 4th is a holiday in the state.

Bank holidays in September 2024 vary across different states, so it’s important for customers to know the local holiday schedules. While all banks in India are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also announced additional holidays specific to each state. Here are some key dates:

  • September 7 (Saturday): Banks in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu will be closed for Ganesh Chaturthi.
  • September 14 (Saturday): Banks in Kerala and Jharkhand will be closed for Karma Puja and First Onam.
  • September 16 (Monday): Banks in several states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Delhi, will be closed for Milad-un-Nabi (the birthday of Prophet Mohammad).
  • September 17 (Tuesday): Banks in Sikkim and Chhattisgarh will be closed for Indra Jatra.
  • September 18 (Wednesday): Banks in Sikkim will be closed for Pang-Lhabsol.
  • September 20 (Friday): Banks in Jammu and Srinagar will be closed for Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi.
  • September 21 (Saturday): Banks in Kerala will be closed for Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi Day.
  • September 23 (Monday): Banks in Jammu and Kashmir will be closed for Maharaja Hari Singh’s birthday.
  • September 28 (Saturday): All banks in India will be closed on the fourth Saturday.

The RBI divides bank holidays into three categories: Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays, and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.

National Holidays and Weekly Closures

The RBI’s bank holiday policy ensures that banks observe both national and regional holidays. Major national holidays like Republic Day, Independence Day, and Gandhi Jayanti are observed across all states. Each state may also have its own holidays that affect local banking operations.

Additionally, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month and every Sunday, following the RBI’s guidelines to provide consistent schedules and regular rest days for bank employees and customers.
