Apple might start making iPads in India again, thanks to the country’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, according to sources cited by Moneycontrol. This move follows previous unsuccessful attempts to partner with China-based BYD due to political issues between India and China.
A senior government official mentioned that Apple was close to setting up an iPad factory with BYD in India. However, it faced some clearance problems, and the situation has now changed. The official added that efforts are underway to help Apple grow significantly over the next two to three years.
Beyond iPads: What’s Next?
In addition to iPads, the Indian government is encouraging Apple to manufacture laptops and desktops in the country. The official highlighted “big plans” for Apple’s expansion over the next few years.
Apple has already increased iPhone production in India and is planning to ramp up the manufacturing of parts for AirPod wireless charging cases. These parts are currently being exported to China and Vietnam.
For this production boost, Apple is considering partnerships with Jabil Inc. in Pune or Foxconn. Plans also include starting the production of true wireless stereo (TWS) AirPods next year.
Building a Local Network
Apple, Foxconn, and Jabil did not respond to queries about these plans, and Livemint could not independently verify the report.
Apple aims to make India a significant manufacturing hub. In May, Mint reported that Apple plans to manufacture a quarter of its iPhones in India over the next three to four years. The company is focusing on building a network of local suppliers instead of relying on Chinese ones.
Sources indicated that Apple has already started developing supply chains in India. Most of the production will be handled by Foxconn and Tata Electronics, who will increase their manufacturing capacities.
“India is an important market for Apple. By December 2023, about 14% of their total iPhone production came from India, both for local use and exports. They aim to increase this to 24-25% by 2027 or 2028,” said a source familiar with the discussions.
India’s Role as a Global Hub
India exported 20% of its domestically made smartphones in 2022, the highest ever, according to Counterpoint Research. With the PLI scheme and other supportive policies, India aims to become a global manufacturing and export hub.
