Amazon India might be planning to launch a new app specifically for its digital payment service, Amazon Pay, according to a report by the Times of India.
Currently, Amazon Pay is available through the main Amazon shopping app, but the company is considering creating a separate app to make the payment service more visible and increase its usage. Sources told the Times of India that Amazon India has been thinking about this change for about a year. By giving Amazon Pay its own app, the company hopes to boost its recognition and user engagement.
Amazon Pay in India offers various financial services, including money transfers, bill payments, insurance purchases, travel bookings, and investments in mutual funds and digital gold. Right now, all these services are accessible only through the main Amazon app.
Launching a standalone app could give Amazon an edge in India’s rapidly growing digital payments market. In July, Amazon Pay handled around 72.4 million transactions, accounting for about 0.5% of all transactions on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) network.
If Amazon goes ahead with this plan, it would follow a trend in the industry. For example, Flipkart, Amazon’s main competitor in India, brought all its financial services together under one platform after separating from PhonePe two years ago. A source mentioned that Amazon has already contacted the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for approval. However, these plans are still under discussion and could change or be dropped.
This move comes as Amazon continues to invest heavily in its Indian operations. In June, the company added ₹600 crore (about $72 million) to Amazon Pay India, bringing its total investment in the payments service to ₹1,950 crore.
