New Delhi: Chinese smartphone maker Oppo, which holds over 5,000 artificial intelligence patents, plans to introduce generative AI (GenAI) features in its phones, aiming to make AI phones mainstream in the coming years. Peter Dohyung Lee, head of product strategy at Oppo, shared these insights.
Lee, who oversees the future devices for Oppo, stated that all their phones would eventually include GenAI features, starting with a target of 50 million devices by the end of this year.
“After feature phones and smartphones, next-gen AI phones will mark the third major shift in mobile technology. Oppo leads in imaging technology, giving us an advantage as we integrate AI to enhance the imaging experience,” he said.
Integrating GenAI Features
Oppo is adding GenAI features to all its products, planning to release over 100 functionalities this year alone. “Oppo aims to make AI phones accessible to everyone and will keep innovating to provide the best AI phone experiences to users,” Lee added. He also mentioned that the company established its own AI center for research and innovation, developing large language models since 2020 and working on large vision models and multimodal technology.
AI Adoption in India
Lee highlighted that India is a significant market for AI and a key focus for Oppo, where it ranks as the fourth-largest player in sales volume.
“India is very important for Oppo. The country has over a billion mobile phone users, with growing smartphone use in smaller towns and villages,” Lee said. He noted that India’s young population is rapidly adopting AI, mainly through phones.
“The Reno12 Series has an AI Recording Summary feature that records meetings in English and Hindi, creating notes and summaries with a single touch. We plan to add more Indian languages to this feature,” he added.
Focus on Privacy and Durability
While AI is a major focus, Lee acknowledged the need for advanced hardware and software to keep up with AI integration. Oppo is prioritizing strong privacy, security, and data encryption to ensure a safe user experience. Durability is also a key focus, ensuring their devices can withstand the evolving technological landscape.
For the rest of the financial year, Oppo India will launch new products and add AI features, updates, and improvements to existing models across different price ranges, Lee said.
He also mentioned that Oppo is open to partnerships with local AI creators and startups in India but did not provide specifics.
