Adani to Build $2 Billion Mega Convention Centre in Mumbai, Rivaling Reliance’s Jio World

Adani Group plans to invest $2 billion to build a massive International Convention Centre (ICC) in Mumbai’s Vile Parle, close to the airport, for maximum visibility. The project will directly compete with Reliance’s Jio World Convention Centre in Bandra Kurla Complex, a prime corporate hub.

Details of the Mega Project

The proposed ICC will span 1.5 million sq. ft, with space for 15,000-20,000 people. Of this, 1.2 million sq. ft will be for indoor events, while 0.3 million sq. ft will be allocated for parking and other services. The centre will also feature a luxury five-star hotel with 275 rooms.

The project is set to be owned and operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, leveraging the group’s management of 11 airports across India.

How It Stacks Up

  • Adani ICC: 1.5 million sq. ft, with a focus on luxury and proximity to transit hubs.
  • Jio World Convention Centre: Mumbai’s current largest, covering 1 million sq. ft.
  • Yashobhoomi, New Delhi: India’s largest at 3.2 million sq. ft, designed to rival convention centres in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

Why Build Near Airports?

According to Anuj Puri of Anarock Property Consultants, convention centres near airports make travel easier for guests and attract international events. Such projects foster business growth, networking, and economic benefits across sectors.

Global Competition

India’s convention centres face competition from major venues in Asia:

  • Shanghai’s NECC: 15.8 million sq. ft with exhibition halls, offices, and a luxury hotel.
  • Hong Kong Convention Centre: 3.2 million sq. ft near Victoria Harbour, hosting 51,000+ events since opening.
  • Suntec Singapore: Over 0.36 million sq. ft of meeting and exhibition space, plus shops, restaurants, and museums.

Strategic Importance

Adani’s ICC aims to position India as a global hub for conferences and exhibitions, catering to growing demand for events in the country. These venues play a crucial role in promoting trade, connecting local businesses with international buyers, and generating employment.

Building such centres also enhances long-term goodwill for business groups, as seen with Mumbai’s iconic Birla Matoshree Hall, which hosts major corporate events.
