Adani Electricity has disconnected power supply to 100 homes in Mumbai’s Chembur area due to long-standing unpaid bills, amounting to a staggering Rs 115 crore. The unpaid dues date back to 2005, with about 1100 families reportedly owing money.
The affected families, residing in Siddharth Colony, Chembur, have appealed for their power supply to be restored on humanitarian grounds following the disconnection.
Long-standing Dues
According to Adani Electricity, these households in Siddharth Colony have some of the highest outstanding bills across their service areas. Despite numerous attempts, the bills have not been paid over the past 19 years, resulting in accumulated interest and penalties.
This situation mirrors a similar incident in 2019 when power was cut off due to non-payment, prompting protests and discussions involving local political parties, residents, and Adani officials. The electricity was eventually restored after negotiations.
Company’s Stance
An Adani Electricity official highlighted that while many families in the colony have started paying regularly since 2019, a significant number continue to use electricity without settling their bills. The official noted instances of high consumption levels among these households, which include multiple air-conditioners, televisions, and other appliances.
In response, Adani Electricity emphasised that unpaid bills impose an unfair burden on customers who pay promptly. They expressed commitment to finding sustainable solutions while urging residents to fulfil their responsibility by paying for the electricity they consume.
