JSW Steel Ramps Up Green Power: 580 MW of Renewable Energy Set for Vijayanagar, Dolvi by March 2025

On Friday, JSW Steel announced that its Board of Directors had earlier approved a deal to purchase 1,637 MW of renewable power for its plants in Vijayanagar, Dolvi, Salem, and Anjar. Out of this, 375 MW is already in use, and the company plans to add another 580 MW by March 2025, according to a press release.

The Board also approved the purchase of 600 MW of hybrid renewable energy, which includes 200 MW from solar power and 400 MW from wind power, at Dolvi. Additionally, 60 MW will be set up at Salem, and 210 MW at JSW Steel Coated Products. With these additions, JSW Steel’s total renewable energy capacity will reach 2,507 MW.

These extra capacities are expected to be ready by FY27. All the renewable energy is being developed under the group captive rules in the Electricity Act.

Project Updates

JSW Steel provided updates on its ongoing projects. At Vijayanagar, a new Hot Strip Mill with a capacity of 5 million tonnes per year (MTPA), built by JSW Vijayanagar Metallics Ltd., was completed in March 2024. The Raw Material Handling System, Sinter Plant, and Blast Furnace have also been finished, and the Steel Melt Shop is currently being worked on. The company plans to increase production in the fourth quarter of FY25.

As part of this plan, the company has postponed the shutdown of Blast Furnace-3 at Vijayanagar, which is being upgraded by 1.5 MTPA, to the first half of FY26.

At Bhushan Power & Steel Ltd. (BPSL), the Phase-II expansion, which increases capacity from 3.5 MTPA to 4.5 MTPA, is finished, and the key equipment is now operational.

JSW Steel Coated Products Ltd. has started work on a new color-coated line with a capacity of 0.12 MTPA in Jammu & Kashmir.

JSW Steel also reported progress on its 30 MTPA slurry pipeline in Odisha, which is expected to be ready by FY27.
