Ericsson’s research and development (R&D) centers in India are focusing more on network APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) to boost 5G innovation, the company said. Network APIs allow different industries to use advanced telecom network features.

“Service providers can now offer the benefits of 5G not just to consumers and businesses but also make their networks platforms for innovation by sharing 5G features with global developers through open network APIs. For example, features like quality on demand and network slicing can be accessed via these APIs,” Ericsson explained.

Andres Vicente, the Head of Southeast Asia, Oceania, and India at Ericsson, said, “We are increasing our efforts on AI, Gen AI, and Network APIs at our R&D centers in India. The combination of high-performance networks and APIs, along with a strong developer community, will drive growth and innovation. This presents a huge opportunity for India, with its large developer and startup ecosystem.”

These APIs use standalone 5G architecture to support business models that depend on network performance. The R&D teams will work on creating programmable API features for simpler and more secure network connections, as well as advanced use cases such as device management, security, and fraud detection.

Ericsson has also teamed up with leading service providers like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to develop and sell APIs on a global scale.
