How Ratan Tata Wanted the World to Remember Him: ‘A Person Who Made a Difference’

Ratan Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Group, passed away on October 9 at the age of 86. After being admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai due to age-related health issues, he was transferred to the ICU earlier this week. Despite the concerns about his health, Tata had shared that he was undergoing routine medical check-ups.

Tata took over leadership of the Tata Group in 1991, a company founded by his great-grandfather over a century ago. Although he stepped down from active management in 2012, his wisdom continued to guide the business during important decisions.

A Legacy of Integrity

Throughout his career, Tata spoke of his desire to be remembered for his integrity and contributions to both business and society. In a 2014 speech, he shared, “I would like to be remembered as someone who never hurt others and worked in the best interest of business.”

Renowned for his humility and philanthropic work, Tata’s leadership and vision earned him great respect, not only for growing the Tata Group but also for his social initiatives.

Making a Difference

In a 2018 interview with Suhel Seth on CNBC, Tata said, “I would like to be remembered as a person who made a difference. Not anything more, not anything less.” This message was consistent throughout his life, as he emphasized the importance of creating positive change in society.

In a 2021 interview, he further reflected, “I want to be seen as someone who made a change, who was responsible for shifting how we looked at things.”

A Life of Service

Born on December 28, 1937, Ratan Tata was educated in architecture and engineering at Cornell University and later completed a management program at Harvard Business School. Active on social media, Tata had millions of followers on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), where he was admired for his personal reflections and advocacy for social causes.

Tata’s legacy is not just defined by his success in business, but by his lifelong commitment to making a positive impact. He will be remembered as a leader who aimed to better the world around him.
