Digital Glitch: HDFC Bank’s Net & Mobile Banking Face Downtime, RTGS & NEFT Disrupted

HDFC Bank, India’s biggest private sector bank, faced unexpected downtime on its net banking and mobile banking services on Monday. The bank said that some operations, like RTGS and NEFT transactions, were disrupted but have since been fixed.

A spokesperson from the bank explained, “We had an unplanned downtime earlier today, which affected some services like RTGS and NEFT on net banking. The issue is now resolved.”

However, sources mentioned that NEFT and RTGS transactions had been facing issues for nearly three days. The bank clarified that net banking was not down for the entire duration.

Many customers took to social media platform X (previously known as Twitter) to report the problem. One customer, Abhishek Choudhari, tweeted, “Is HDFC Bank server down? Can’t access net banking or the mobile app.” Another user, Suma, said she couldn’t log in for an hour due to a server issue.

Several other users also complained of error messages or maintenance alerts when trying to access HDFC’s online services.

HDFC Bank has been working on improving its digital banking systems after facing a ban from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in December 2020. The ban, which lasted over a year, stopped the bank from issuing new credit cards or launching new digital services. The restrictions were lifted by the RBI in March 2022.

In June 2022, HDFC Bank announced that it had moved its payment systems out of its core banking module to reduce payment downtime. The bank has also set up a new centre in Bengaluru to upgrade its mobile and internet banking platforms.
