Jio Pushes for Auction of Satellite Spectrum, Challenging Telecom Regulator’s Stance

Reliance Jio has urged the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) to reconsider its stance on satellite spectrum pricing, arguing that the current consultation paper ignores the need for fair competition between satellite and ground-based networks. Jio wants satellite spectrum, which can be used for mobile services, to be auctioned, just like terrestrial spectrum.

While Jio and Vodafone Idea favor auctions, satcom companies like Bharti-backed OneWeb support the administrative allocation of spectrum. Jio argues that without auctions, satellite companies could gain an unfair advantage over traditional telecom operators.

In a letter to Trai chairman, Jio raised concerns about the regulator leaning towards administrative allocation, which contradicts the new Telecommunications Act that encourages auctions for commercial services. Jio believes this could lead to legal challenges, as the consultation paper doesn’t address key aspects of competition.

Trai had earlier released a paper to seek opinions on pricing satellite spectrum, but Jio says it lacks sufficient discussion on creating a level playing field between satellite and terrestrial services. Jio insists that both auction and administrative methods should be considered equally, giving stakeholders a fair chance to provide input.
