JSW MG Motor & Vision Mechatronics Join Forces to Repurpose Used EV Batteries for Large-Scale Energy Storage with Homegrown Battery Management System

JSW MG Motor India announced a partnership with Vision Mechatronics on Friday to repurpose old electric vehicle (EV) batteries for large-scale energy storage. These used EV batteries will be given a second life through a homegrown battery management system. The first product from this collaboration has been launched in Pune, where it is being used as a backup power solution for an industrial facility.

JSW MG Motor India will supply old EV batteries that can no longer be used in cars, and Vision Mechatronics will convert them into energy storage systems. The initial project involves a 36-kilowatt UPS backup solution for industrial use.

Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer of JSW MG Motor India, explained that even though these batteries are no longer suitable for vehicles, they can still be repurposed. “This shows that the life of the battery doesn’t end when the car’s journey ends,” he said.

This project is part of JSW MG Motor’s broader “Project Revive” initiative, which aims to create innovative solutions to reuse EV batteries. The company has already conducted two pilot projects: an off-grid charging station with IIT Delhi and Batx, and a 5kWh energy storage system at a school in Nainital with Lohum and Teri.

Rashi Gupta, Managing Director of Vision Mechatronics, said the repurposed batteries can be used for various purposes like UPS systems or replacing diesel generators. Right now, the focus is on UPS systems because they offer the quickest benefits, but in the future, the technology could be used for wider applications.
