Tata Power-DDL and Nissin Electric Unveil India’s First Micro Substation: A Breakthrough in Power Supply

Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL) and Japan’s Nissin Electric are launching a new project to test a micro substation with a power voltage transformer (PVT) in India. This project aims to deliver stable electricity to areas that don’t have a full power grid.

The project, part of a global demonstration of Japan’s energy-saving technologies, is being funded by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Tata Power-DDL, which supplies power to over 2 million customers in North Delhi, hopes this initiative will bring affordable and reliable power to remote parts of India that are near power lines but not connected to the grid.

Instead of building a large and expensive network, this micro substation with a PVT will convert high-voltage electricity from transmission lines into low-voltage power suitable for homes. The demo project will use a 100-kVA unit to reduce the voltage from 66 kV to 240 V for residential use.

Gajanan S Kale, CEO of Tata Power-DDL, believes this project could revolutionise power supply in remote and rural areas. The micro substation will need only 40 square metres of space. Kenji Kobayashi, Managing Director of Nissin Electric, mentioned that the company is committed to supporting sustainable development goals.

The project agreement was signed on August 21, and NEDO had previously signed a letter of intent with Power Finance Corporation in January for this demonstration.
