India’s second-richest man, Gautam Adani, was rejected by Jai Hind College in Mumbai in the late 1970s. Decades later, the same college invited him to deliver a lecture on Teachers’ Day.
Vikram Nankani, President of Jai Hind College Alumni Association, shared how Adani’s application for admission was declined. During his speech, Adani spoke about his early days and how he never finished his education.
At 16, Adani left school and moved to Mumbai to explore new opportunities. He worked as a diamond sorter for two years before returning to Gujarat to run a packaging factory with his brother. In the 1980s, he started a business trading polymers, which later grew into a global trading company. He credited the 1991 economic reforms for helping his business succeed.
In 1994, Adani’s company, now called Adani Enterprises, went public, with its IPO being a big success. Adani also touched on the Hindenburg issue, calling it a planned short-selling attack to harm the company.
He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and highlighted his involvement in the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, which aims to provide better living conditions for over a million people. For Adani, this project is not just about urban renewal but about restoring dignity to residents.
The Dharavi project is a joint effort between the Adani Group and the Government of Maharashtra to build homes for Dharavi’s slum residents.
