Karnataka RERA Names Retired IAS Officer Rakesh Singh as New Chairperson

Rakesh Singh, a retired IAS officer, has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Karnataka Real Estate Regulatory Authority (K-RERA), effective immediately.

Singh’s appointment comes after a court order that prevented Naveen Raj Singh, the principal secretary of the housing department, from continuing as the acting chairperson of K-RERA.

Rakesh Singh has a strong background, having previously led the water resources department, served as an administrator for BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike), and held the position of additional chief secretary in the urban development department.

Earlier this week, the Karnataka High Court, under Justice R Nataraj, reviewed a case challenging Naveen Raj Singh’s role as acting chairperson. The court stated that according to the Karnataka Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Rules, 2017, there is no provision for a third person or a state government officer to be appointed as an interim chairperson. The court ordered that the most senior member of K-RERA should act as the chairperson until a new one is appointed according to the rules.
