Hyundai Motor India to Invest ₹180 Crore in Cutting-Edge Hydrogen Innovation Centre at IIT-M Thaiyur Campus

Hyundai Motor India is planning to set up a Hydrogen Innovation Centre at the IIT Madras campus in Thaiyur. The company will invest ₹180 crore in this new facility, which will focus on research and development in hydrogen technology. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, laid the foundation stone for the centre during the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave held earlier today.

The new centre will be built on a 65,000 sq ft plot at IIT Madras, located on the outskirts of Chennai. This project is part of a collaboration between Hyundai Motor India, the Tamil Nadu investment promotion agency Guidance Tamil Nadu, and IIT Madras. The aim is to advance hydrogen technology and support the development of a hydrogen ecosystem in India.

IIT Madras Director, Professor V. Kamakoti, expressed excitement about the partnership. He said the new research facility will drive innovation in hydrogen mobility and help establish India as a leader in technology and innovation.

Hyundai Motor India’s Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer, Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, said the company is committed to supporting Tamil Nadu’s goal of developing a sustainable system for alternative fuels. He hopes the Hydrogen Innovation Centre will boost the adoption of hydrogen technology in Tamil Nadu.

The centre will focus on several key areas, including developing equipment for producing green hydrogen, localising manufacturing and supply chains, and testing fuel cells. The facility is expected to start operations by 2026.
