In June 2024, Reliance Jio added almost 4 million new active users, outpacing Bharti Airtel, which added 0.67 million. Vodafone Idea (Vi) saw a decline, losing 2.71 million users. This data comes from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).
At the end of June, Jio had 440.94 million active users, Airtel had 384.83 million, and Vi had 188.26 million. Active users are those regularly using a mobile network.
Airtel and Jio both increased their 4G and 5G users in June, with Airtel adding 3.17 million and Jio adding 1.91 million. Vi only gained 0.56 million 3G/4G users and has not yet launched 5G.
In terms of gross customer additions, Jio led with 1.91 million new users, while Airtel added 1.25 million. Vi’s gross user base shrank by 0.86 million to 217.29 million. Jio and Airtel’s total user bases were 476.53 million and 389.02 million respectively.
Jio’s market share grew to 40.71% in June, while Airtel’s increased to 33.23%. Vi’s market share fell to 18.56%. India’s overall mobile user base grew slightly by 0.13% to 1.17 billion, and wireless tele-density increased to 83.45%.
In the landline segment, Jio added 0.43 million new users, bringing its total to 13.19 million. Airtel added 44,611 users, reaching 9.05 million, while BSNL’s landline user base dropped to 6.36 million. Airtel leads in M2M (Machine-to-Machine) cellular connections with 28.29 million, holding nearly 54% of the market. Vi and Jio have 14.58 million and 6.72 million M2M connections, respectively.
In June, 11.84 million users requested to switch their mobile numbers, bringing the total number of porting requests to 997.44 million.
