Elon Musk’s X Faces Major Privacy Complaints in Europe Over AI Data Use

A privacy group from Vienna called Noyb has filed complaints against Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), in eight European countries. The group claims that X has been using the personal data of over 60 million European users to train its AI technology without asking for their permission.

The complaints follow earlier action by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC), which had already taken X to court over similar data collection practices. Noyb criticized X for not informing users that their data was being used for AI, with many users only learning about it through a viral post in late July.

While X agreed to stop processing users’ personal data for AI, Noyb is calling for a deeper investigation, questioning whether the company has fully complied with European Union laws. The group has asked for an urgent review in the eight countries where they filed complaints to ensure that X follows the EU’s strict General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Noyb has a history of taking on big tech companies, including Meta, and has often led to regulatory actions in Europe.
