GAIL has signed a preliminary agreement with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL) to form a joint venture. This partnership will focus on managing RRVUNL’s gas-based power plants and developing 1,000 MW of solar and wind energy projects in Rajasthan.
The agreement aims to improve the efficiency of gas-powered plants in Rajasthan. By investing in these plants, GAIL, which is India’s top natural gas supplier, could secure a steady customer base for its gas supplies.
The two companies will consider moving RRVUNL’s gas-based power plants in Dholpur and Ramgarh into the new joint venture. They also plan to develop solar and wind power projects to provide continuous power supply.
Before moving forward, both companies will conduct thorough studies to ensure the feasibility of each project.
RRVUNL is responsible for developing and maintaining power projects in Rajasthan, while GAIL supplies gas across the state through its extensive pipeline network. GAIL is also the country’s largest importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and needs to find customers for the gas it imports.
In the first quarter of this year, GAIL’s profits soared by 93% to ₹2,724 crore, largely due to increased electricity demand from the record summer heat, which boosted gas usage in power generation.
